Basic operating principle

The sonnenBatterie Evo is an intelligent energy storage solution that actively monitors and manages energy production, consumption, and storage within a home. Connected to the grid through the main distribution panel, it works seamlessly with both existing and newly installed photovoltaic (PV) systems. Instead of connecting directly to the PV array, the storage system uses a power meter and current transformers to track PV generation and monitor the energy usage within the building.

The SonnenBatterie Evo offers three operational modes: Self-Consumption, Backup, and Time-of-Use, catering to different energy management needs.

Self-Consumption Mode

Self-consumption refers to the portion of generated solar PV power that is used either directly within the home or stored in the battery. This is the default operating mode.

Generation > Consumption
When PV power generation exceeds consumption—typically around midday—there is a surplus of electricity. This excess energy is used to charge the battery of the storage system. If the battery cannot store all the surplus energy, the remaining excess is fed into the public electricity grid.

Consumption > Generation
When consumption is higher than PV power generation—such as in the evening—a deficit of electricity occurs. In this case, the storage system discharges the battery to compensate for as much of the deficit as possible. If the battery cannot fully cover the deficit, the remaining shortfall is supplied by the public electricity grid.

Backup mode

The sonnenBatterie Evo storage system seamlessly switches between grid and backup operation. When there is a grid failure, the storage system automatically detects the outage and disconnects itself from the public electrical mains.

In this scenario, the system creates a micro-grid using the power stored in the batteries. This ensures that essential appliances connected to the essential loads circuit in the house continue to receive electrical power.

Microgrid Re-Enabling

When the battery’s state of charge (SOC) drops to a minimum during backup operation:

  1. The microgrid deactivates, and the system enters ‘standby mode’. Essential loads and the PV inverter disconnect.
  2. The system reactivates at a preset “Reenabling time.” If excess PV energy is available, the microgrid remains active; otherwise, it returns to ‘standby mode’.
  3. This cycle repeats up to three times. If the battery cannot recharge sufficiently, the system shuts down to prevent further discharge.

Blackstart Functionality

During a grid outage, the storage system automatically enables the microgrid based on battery SOC. Users can manually activate the microgrid with the blackstart button:

  1. Ensure the storage system is on.
  2. Hold the blackstart button for 60 seconds. The system will continue operation if there is sufficient PV energy; otherwise, it returns to ‘standby mode’.

Time-of-Use Mode

In Time-of-Use mode, the storage system charges from the grid during user-selected time windows, taking advantage of lower electricity rates. This stored energy can be used during peak hours, minimizing costs.
